ANNE CHURCHES

Anne Churches Rug Weaver

Weaving means rug making to me; I design my hand-woven rugs and wall hangings taking inspiration from the colours and textures found in the natural world around me. The individually designed hand-woven rugs may create the illusion of a scene or capture an idea in geometric form.

I began rug weaving in 1998 after I found an old loom in a second hand shop. I soon acquired another loom – this time a beautiful Swedish Glimakra Countermarch loom.

As I became more involved with rug weaving I was fascinated with the idea of using the Shaft Switching Lever System developed by master weaver Peter Collingwood. Fortunately I was able to build the system for both of my looms

The converted looms enable me to do more intricate designs. My original loom has a 3 end block weave lever system allowing colour shifts every 19 mm. The glimakra loom has a 4 end block weave lever system which allows colour changes every 9 mm.

My workshop is our rumpus room at home in Kyabram, Northern Victoria.

Weaving is my relaxation; I especially enjoy the design process using computer software, then choosing the colours that complement the design.

Woven as long wearing floor rugs, their decorative quality makes them equally appropriate as wall hangings. I Work mainly in linen and carpet wool (which I dye myself).
